The Democratic members are being urged to vote for Mrs Hillary Clinton by a Federal Colorado judge.

The two Democratic electors were hoping to convince disgruntled Republicans who did not support Trump to vote for a third party candidate in a desperate ploy to stop Trump reaching the 270 electoral college votes needed.

The ruling was filed by the two Electoral College members in the state who wanted to vote for someone other than Hillary Clinton and was part of a last-ditch attempt to elect someone other than Trump.

But Judge Wiley Daniel said granting an injunction to allow Electoral College to vote against the popular vote would "undermine" the electoral process.

The President-elect lost the popular vote by more than 2,600,000 votes but won 306 Electoral College votes surpassing the 270 needed to take the White House.

Clinton won the state of Colorado with 1,338,870 votes compared to Trump’s 1,202,484.

As part of the plot to usurp Trump’s road to the White House, the activists would need to persuade all 232 Democratic Electors as well as 38 Republican Electors to vote for someone else.

The Colorado Independent said: "Because more national electors are Republicans, they assume the alternative would have to be a Republican.

"And even as Democrats they are OK with that because it’s likely a Republican they might choose would be better than Trump."

Two of Colorado’s nine Electors, former State Senator Polly Baca and a maths teacher named Bob Nemanich filed the lawsuit in the latest bid to stop Trump becoming President.

A Federal Government website states: "The Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on the question of whether pledges and penalties for failure to vote as pledged may be enforced under the Constitution. No Elector has ever been prosecuted for failing to vote as pledged."

Electoral College members are set to cast their official votes on December 19.
