The Welshman confirmed the news on Twitter following his exploits in firing Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016

Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale has announced his engagement to long-term girlfriend Emma Rhys-Jones.

The Welshman, who celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, revealed the happy news on Twitter following his exploits in Euro 2016.

Bale tweeted: "She said yes!! This is a birthday weekend I won't forget for a long time."

He is pictured in a collage with Emma holding up her hand to show off her engagement ring, while the pair are also seen with friends.

Bale has two children with high-school sweetheart Rhys-Jones and has now announced the pair's intention to tie the knot.

Their first child, Alba Violet, was born in Cardiff in October 2012. They had another daughter, Nava Valentine, in March this year.

Despite the duo leaving in Madrid where Bale plays his club football, their second child was also born in the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

Bale starred for his country at Euro 2016, scoring in each of Wales' three games in Group B to help them top the four-team table.

He then helped them to victories over Northern Ireland and Belgium in the knockout stages, before Chris Coleman's side lost to eventual winners Portugal in the last four.

Bale has taken a holiday in the Balearic Islands this week before returning to pre-season with Real Madrid as they look to build on last season's Champions League triumph.

But while the likes of his Real Madrid teammates are more often pictured partying, the Welsh wonder proved himself ever the family man.
