    In the clip, 25-year-old Alex Minassian is heard shouting "kill me" as he pointed an unknown object at police officers before plummeting to the ground.

    A police officer is heard warning the suspect "get down or you'll be shot”, as he proceeded to point the unknown object at police officers.

    Members of the public can be seen strolling out of a building catching a glimpse the standoff between officers and the alleged attacker before scurrying away.

    The footage was shot by a witness near the scene, which also showed the suspect lying on the pavement as Toronto police officers arrested him, without shots being fired.

    Police found he was in fact not carrying a gun and the object is yet to be identified.

    Mike McCormack, President of the Toronto Police Association commended the arresting officer for his , saying he did a "continual threat assessment" before making a decision not to shoot the suspect.

    Minassian is being questioned by police who believed the attack was deliberate.

    Investigations are still underway and police remain unsure of his true motive behind the van rampage.

    The suspect is due in court later today at 10am local time.

    Ralph Goodale, the Canadian Public Safety Minister said he "does not believe the attack was linked to terrorism".

    Further analysis suggests mental illness may be a cause of his attack.

    It has also been discovered Minassian had discussions with netizens on the web about Elliot Rodger, the Santa Barbara mass shooter.

    Mr Minassian rented the van and drove into a crowd of people on Yonge Street at about 1.30pm local time yesterday.

    A witness to the incident, Ali Shaker, was driving along the street at the time of the attack said that the van sped along the pavement, colliding into a stroller and "crumbling down people one by one".

    Witnesses at the scene said: "This person was intentionally doing this, he was killing everybody.”

    Another witness at the scene said: "He kept going, he kept going. People were getting hit, one after another."

    Toronto police officers said the suspect had no previous records.

    The police chief also said that it was not known if the attack was terrorism related.

    He said: "Based on what we have there's nothing that has it to compromise the national security at this time."

    Former classmates of the suspect described him as "socially awkward".

    They said Minassian attended a special needs programmed at high school and would usually stroll along school halls with his head downcast and hands clasped together.

    One of his former classmates, Shereen Chami, said he would make "meowing noises".
