The unfortunate incident happened on Thursday last week near the Lower Austrian town of Gföhl.

As the driver enjoyed the attention of his partner in the passenger seat a deer jumped out of the woods, causing him to brake sharply and her to bite down on his most treasured possession.

He screamed in agony, lost control of the car and ended up crashing into trees at the roadside.

Both needed to be treated in hospital.

Ambulance authorities listed the accident's cause as "penis bite caused crash".

At a local hospital the man was "subjected to rather uncomfortable medical procedures to repair his wounded manhood", according to media reports.

But doctors said the man's potency would be restored in time.

Police are mulling charging him and his lover with endangering other road users.
