Breaking News: British Embassy in Turkey closed down amid terror attack rumour

The closure of the embassy in Ankara is said to only be a precautionary measure, according to the Foreign Office.

The Foreign Office said: "The British Embassy Ankara will be closed to the public on Friday 16 September for security reasons."

"The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to within 10 km of the border with Syria and to the city of Diyarbakir."

The closure follows a similar move made by Germany, who closed their embassy, consular offices and a school over fears of a potential terror attack during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

The German embassy was also forced to close in March after "concrete indications" showed it could be targeted by terrorists.

In a statement, Germany’s foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the threats were being "taken very seriously”.

Turkey has been hit by a spate of high-profile terror attacks in the past year.

The embassy will remain closed for one day.
