The bare-chested youngsters risked their lives as they left the coast of north Africa and headed towards mainland Spain on the 7ft board
Two teenage ' illegal immigrants ' have been rescued after trying to paddle their way to Spain on a surfboard.
The bare-chested youngsters risked their lives as they left the coast of north Africa and headed towards Europe on the board .
The journey is hazardous enough in boats, with numerous people having drowned due to rough sea conditions and bad weather.
The immigrants, who have not been identified, were spotted by fisherman using the surfboard to try to get to the Spanish mainland.
They had no paddles using only their hands to move the board through the water -and were wearing just pairs of shorts.
At the time of the rescue, it was mid-afternoon with high temperatures.
However, night would have brought much colder weather, with the risk of dehydration and hypothermia.
Spain's maritime rescue service had already intercepted two inflatable boats with 11 men on board in the same stretch of water just off the island of Tarifa, the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula.
The second alert was sounded by the fishermen who spotted the two immigrants attempting to cross the sea on the surfboard.
"It had already been a complicated day when we also had to rescue these two immigrants trying to cross the ocean on a surfboard," said a spokesman for the rescue ship, Alkaid.
Many migrants are so desperate to reach Europe that they are willing to try an array of dangerous measures to do so such as hiding inside jet skis.
Others pay people traffickers thousands of euros to make the trip by boat but they are often set adrift.
The two teenagers who tried to paddle to Spain were pulled aboard the rescue ship and taken to the port of Tarifa.
