During the operation carried out by the Proactive Open-Arms NGO, up to 1,800 migrants were rescued in some 12 miles north of Libya yesterday.According to the coast guard, migrants were rescued from 33 boats, including 27 rubber dinghies on.
An estimated 154,000 came to Italy in 2015 and 2,892 died.
Majority of the migrants came from Africa, including Nigeria, Eritrea, Guinea, Gambia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Somalia.
