    UK experienced record breaking rain after 105 years, as lightning storms strikes after record-breaking temperatures

    Storms and torrential downpours are sweeping across the Midlands and Manchester, causing widespread disruption to cars, flights and trains


    It was the hottest September weather in 105 years today, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 34.4C in some areas of Britain.

    But now, just hours later, the conditions have taken a turn for the worse, with thunder and lightning storms striking the country instead.

    This evening, storms and torrential downpours were sweeping across the Midlands, causing hazardous driving conditions and even flooding.

    Some Birmingham-bound flights were diverted, while Midland Metro services were cancelled between Wednesbury and Snow Hill due to a power outage.

    The power later returned, but shortly before 7.30pm, the metro service tweeted: "Apologies to passengers who were stuck at stops in Birmingham.

    "Due to a lightning strike our communications have been disabled. Engineers have been informed and are working to fix the problem."
