Shocking: Muslim woman, said to be Scottish wearing hijab set on fire while shopping in New York

    New York City

Nemariq Alhinai, 35, a dentist from Hamilton near Glasgow, was reportedly wearing a hijab while shopping in Manhattan at the weekend when the attack occurred near Valentino on Fifth Avenue and East 54th Street.

Police have released CCTV footage of the man believed to be responsible for the attack showing him walking eastbound on East 54th Street swinging his arms around the time of the incident about 9 pm on Saturday.

Police said Ms Alhinai felt a warm sensation on her left arm and, when she looked down, noticed her blouse was on fire.

She was said to have patted out the flames. But she then looked up and saw the suspect from the video standing next to her with a lighter in his hand.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force was investigating the incident, the New York Postreported.

But the paper said it was unclear whether the woman’s religion was a motivating factor in the attack.

The man disappeared down a side street, leaving her with a “quarter-sized hole” in her blouse and no injuries, NYPD spokesman Christopher Pisano told The Washington Post.

“The male doesn’t say anything and walks away,” Pisano said.

Fifth Avenue is known for its luxury boutiques and big department stores.

Police refused releasing her name to the public but The Press and Journal reported her name to be Ms Aihinai and dentist by profession in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire.
