The former Home Secretary visited Buckingham Palace this afternoon, where the Queen officially asked her to form a new government.

Her visit was around 20 minutes after David Cameron went to the Palace to offer his resignation, with Samantha and their children in tow.

Mrs May returned to Downing Street, and gave a speech putting social justice at the heart of her Government.

She said she wanted to address the poorest and most disadvantaged in society, and the people who had been left behind.

She said: "I know you're working around the clock, I know you're doing your best and I know sometimes it can be a struggle.

"The government I lead will not be led by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours."

Mrs May is the 13th Prime Minister during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

And she is the UK's second female Prime Minister, after Margaret Thatcher. The announcement by Buckingham Palace after Theresa May was invited by Queen Elizabeth II to become Prime Minister and form a new government

Pictures were released of the visit, during which Theresa May curtsied before the Queen and kissed her hand.

Mrs May bore a striking resemblance to Mrs Thatcher in pictures taken during her short drive to Buckingham Palace.

Mrs May arrived at the Palace by ministerial car with husband Philip, having set off from the House of Commons only after receiving the signal that predecessor David Cameron's resignation as PM had been accepted by the Queen and that he had advised the head of state to appoint the former Home Secretary in his place.

Mr Cameron was accompanied by wife Samantha and children Nancy, Elwen and Florence as he left 10 Downing Street for the last time as Prime Minister.
